KRIZIA '77-'89

Mariuccia Mandelli established her ready-to-wear fashion house, Krizia, in 1954 by selling clothes from her Fiat 500. In the 1980’s Krizia combined japanese avant garde looks with the high fashion elegance of Mugler and Montana to form a mezmerizing hybrid style world that in retrospect is highly underrated.

Looking at Krizia campaigns from that era (which were mostly shot in a semi-surrealist style by Barry Ryan and Giovanni Gastel) from today’s perspective they seem incredibly fresh. These images, not unlike the clothes, strictyly emphasize shape yet their gestures are joyful, strangely sincere and free. An exentric mix of cultural, high and low referrences that would not seem out of place next to Balenciaga and Marine Serre. A glimse of tomorrow seen then.
